THE MOTION PICTURE MING!
THE MOTION PICTURE MING MIXTAPE
AARON MINGO: SONGWRITER, PRODUCER AND HIP HOP ARTIST
The release of Aaron Mingo’s CD, “The Motion Picture Ming Mixtape,” is a time for celebration. It represents both continuity and change in African American expressive culture. Mingo’s initial project is an important moment where art triumphs over artifice.
Featuring fourteen tracks, each revealing another dimension of his artistry, the Motion Picture Ming Mixtape covers themes as varied as family, personal relationships, religion, spirituality, sports, style and the challenge facing African Americans in today’s society. Each cut clearly shows Mingo’s skills as a songwriter and performer. He moves with ease from “D.C. to Go Go” to “ Stop Frontin” and it is evident that this Hip Hop Mixtape is going to be a classic. The response has already been overwhelming. It has been selected as "CD Spotlight Album of the Week" in a Philadelphia newspaper, featured on the Urban Philly website and nationally acclaimed in Liberator Magazine: www.liberatormagazine.com/live/index.htm. Mingo has received international attention through his selection as Spotlight Artist on the Global Cipha website: www.thaglobalcipha.com.
Mingo is captured in “Hip Hop Modes of Being: The Interplay of the Personal, Public and Historical,” in the following manner: “ The newest Philly artist to bring that North Philly Flava to the game is Aaron Mingo and it is in the tradition of what is known as Hip Hop Eco Composition. Mingo’s cinematic narrative is in Hip Hop Nation Language and it conveys the sense and sound ,the emotional history of a young Black man coming to consciousness in 21st century America. It also provides a glimpse into the collective lives of a generation of African Americans living in urban spaces as diverse as Philly, Willingboro and Shady Grove.”
So Philly: An Ode To The City He Loves
The Motion Picture Ming Mixtape is an extraordinary mix of multiple character flashbacks, flashforwards and close up shots like “ Canceled Debt” and that dynamic Ode to Philadelphia, “ So Philly.” This kid is leaning to the left and blowing out his pronouns and spitting those verbs with all of the action living in 2008 brings. Ming/Mang realizes that imitation is never good enough for an original artist. In a summary of 21st century music, James G. Spady, author of Tha Global Cipha: Hip Hop Culture and Consciousness wrote, “ One of the hottest mixed tapes to hit the music scene in 2008 is Mingos Motion Picture Mixed Tape hosted by J. J. Brown out of Medina---Brooklyn, New York. Although Brown is styling it up on some old Bruknamn Flava, the MC is unmistakably bringing that Philly sound as well as Philly ethics and ethos to a cultural practice long seen as essential to Hip Hop poetics. It is to Mingo’s credit that he manages to combine and recombine the Old School Flava of Mixtape masters like Lord Finesse with Philly’s own DJ Drama( getting it on in the ATL) and DJ Khaled (bringing it dirty and dusty right out of the MIA). “
Aaron Mingo Speaks
When asked what he set out to achieve, Aaron Mingo offers this explanation: “ Mixtapes have changed over the years but traditionally, when I was growing up you had a mix of songs with scratching and blends and you put it out there. Usually they would take a compilation of music, bring on an artist that they were promoting and place them right alongside artists that were hot at the time. They would put all of these artists on a record and sell it . Now it is more or less just one artist with all of his material. You have a host, a DJ (like DJ Khaled , Drama, Kay Slay or whoever). It is more of a marketing product and a lot of times some use one verse, Bam, then it mixes it into another song and some are full songs. So you have a range. I wanted Motion Picture Ming Mixtape to do all of that and more. I wanted it to give you the scratches and blends of a traditional mix tape but at the same time reflect the more contemporary mode of keeping it focused on one artist’s perspective.”
